Introducing the Municipal Administrator Workplace Conditions Study

Municipal Administrators in small populations have been asking for help for a long time. Many have spoken up about the pressures they face, the behavior they deal with, and the impact these conditions have on their work. Matthewson & Company carried out this survey to document their shared experience, and to provide the catalyst this sector needs for meaningful changes and supports. We invited approximately 950 municipal administrators, all in small population locations across Alberta, Saskatchewan and Manitoba to participate. We received a 15% response rate, considered strong for a voluntary professional survey. A total of 147 administrators shared their experiences openly and anonymously. We combined their responses and reported only as aggregated data, in response to the express concerns that if they answered the survey, and their Council knew, they could be in trouble. People should read this report because administrator workplace conditions directly affect how municipalities function. When administrators work in stable and respectful environments, communities benefit. When they don’t, it affects all of us as taxpayers and citizens.
